AbstractThe International Standard Organization (ISO) has provided an abstract standard framework for general distributed processing systems, called the Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP), which include Distributed Multimedia Systems (DMS). Their development has been pushed by the performance of the present technology which can support most requirements of multimedia and distributed systems. Unfortunately, RM-ODP has a highly abstract and general framework, so that its employment in specific areas such as DMS is not simple without a use of a framework and guidelines. Nevertheless, it is very useful for ODP designers, because it provides all most necessary concepts. This thesis develops a framework for DMS based on RM-ODP with useful facilities which are obtained by specialization of its existing concepts, addition of new necessary concepts, and provision of general models with general process steps. All of these facilities and extensions bring many advantages which enable successful solution of the main problems of DMS design.
