AbstractThe feasibility of Integrated Pest Management of eggplant fruit & shoot borer (Leucinodes Orbonalis Gness) was examined, in a field experiment conducted during January 1996 to May 1996. Densities of eggplant fruit & shoot borer, other pests and predators were determined in pesticide free and pesticide treated plots (simulated farmer's practice). A social survey involving the eggplant farmers, extension agencies, scientists and local pesticide dealers was also conducted to know the cmrent trend of pesticide use and related aspects. The pesticide free plot had fewer pests and a much higher number and diversity of predators than pesticide treated plot. A secondary pest out break of mite (Tetranchychus cinnabainus) and thrips was observed in pesticide treated plot. Pesticides were found ineffective against L. orbonalis and by and large they killed disproportionately predators. Most farmers received information on pesticide use from the dealers, who were primarily businessman. Conspicuous by the complete exclusion were research and extension program. The extension agencies recommends the outdated insecticides with higher frequency but farmers were using different insecticides with higher doses but less frequently. The local pesticide retailers was found to be source of knowledge for majority of farmers even through they had little knowledge of pesticide use and hazards. The health hazards were frequently observed due to poor knowledge about method of handling and use of pesticides. Due to intensive use of pesticides, residue of fenvalerate and endosulfan was found from samples of 45% local market.
