AbstractIndonesia is a rapidly developing country that aims to use advanced technology to stimulate socio-economic development. It has identified nine strategic industries to serve as vehicles for modernizing Indonesia's production system. The aircraft industry is a strategic industry led by IPTN. This study is of an exploratory nature and aims at looking at how IPTN used the technology transfer mechanisms of licensing, sub-contracting, and joint ventures to upgrade its level of technology. The difficulties faced by IPTN in implementing these mechanisms are identified and the measures taken by IPTN to assimilate and benefit from the technology transferred are also presented. Finally some conditions for successful technology transfer and guidelines for ensuring effective transfer is presented.
