AbstractUrban transportation system has its contribution to increased economic activities, changes in living condition of citizens and also adverse environmental impact. Recently, sustainability has increased in popularity as key indicator to reduce the negative impacts while increasing the performance of urban transp011ation system. Thus, the research focus on assessing the sustainability of Mandalay city transportation system using the indicators. It is canied out by developing the sustainability indicators for urban transportation system with respect to the objectives of sustainable urban transportation system in accordance with the criteria, baseline inf01mation and analysis of impacts based on the selected indicators to explore the social, economic and environmental impacts from Mandalay city transportation system. The sustainability assessment results highlight that Mandalay city transpo11ation system that cause negative significant impacts are due to the poor public transport services, qualitY of walking and cycling, high rates of accidents and poor accessibility for people with disabilities, no policies to consider environment in transport sector as well as poor regulation for fuel quality standard and emission standard. Moreover, the study recommend the environmental management measures that reflects the improvement in policy, regulation, prioritization of the investment to improvement of urban transport facilities and awareness of the problem from highly dependence on motor vehicles thereby supporting the decisionmakers and policy-makers that indicators are useful tool to assess the urban transport performances in Mandalay city.
