Abstract | The cement industry is in a growth stage in Vietnam. This research study recommended a qualitative competitive strategy analysis. In addition, it pointed out the directions for future changes required in Cement Companies in order to respond more effectively to a rapidly changing national economic environment. The case study was focused on Danang Cement Company (DCC) - a local medium size cement manufacturer in Danang City. The company has dominated the cement market in Central Vietnam for a few years. Competition among cement manufacturers is getting fiercer. Leading cement companies have been concentrating in two main cities Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh and will soon enter the regional markets. Danang Cement Company is facing a big task of adapting to these major changes in order to survive and develop in this new competitive environment. Hence, the problem of designing an effective competitive strategy is becoming more and more essential and crucial. This study aimed to develop a competitive strategy for Danang Cement Company. Following the conceptual framework recommended by Hill & Jones as a basis, an exhaustive review of available documents with the comprehensive in-depth interviews were used to identify external opportunities, threats, internal strengths and weaknesses which lead to a range of alternatives for competitive strategies developed. Possible courses of actions were suggested to support the implementation of the proposed competitive strategy for achieving the company's desired performance level. |
