Abstract | The joint venture mechanism is very useful in transferring technology. Among all kinds of foreign direct investment in the People's Republic of China (PRC), joint venture is the most frequently adopted form for foreign investors to minimize the risk in entering China, which has been viewed as a huge potential market by DCs since 1978. Manufacturing technologies are most likely to be transferred to the PRC because foreign investors can utilize the country's cheap and abundant labor and rich natural resources. Chinese are eager to absorb technologies which are new to them. Favorable conditions have been given to those who are willing to transfer their technology and joint venture laws have gradually been developed to protect the technology receiver on behalf of the Chinese. This study is a preliminary step towards understanding problems in managing joint ventures in the PRC. A review will be done on the major problems in manufacturing technology transfer through joint ventures from developed countries to developing countries in previous literature. Then an implementation model will developed on the basis of the literature review. A case study of selected successful manufacturing joint venture has been conducted regarding technology transfer issues by applying the proposed model. |
