Abstract | Waste stabilization ponds have been successfully used for sewage treatment. They are a low-cost, simple-technology method for treating wastewaters, which require simple maintenance and can achieve a high degree of pathogen attenuation. The maturation ponds of the waste stabilization pond system may be used to raise fish, which aids in further treatment of the pond water. In the present study, eight maturation ponds were fed with effluent from a facultative pond. These maturation ponds were stocked with sex-reversed male tilapia. Two of these ponds were used as control ponds and were not stocked with tilapia. The effects of tilapia stocking density (SD) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the pond water quality and fish growth were determined. It was observed that with increasing SD, there were decreases in total kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN), phosphorus, and COD concentrations. TKN, phosphorus, and COD were removed 27 - 69%, 16-46%, and 6-26%, respectively. However, the SD of 3 fish/m3 resulted in the lowest TSS and chlorophyll a concentrations. The HRT of 4 days resulted in maximum tilapia growth, but better pond water quality was observed with longer HR T. Tilapia stocking in the maturation ponds at SD of 3-15 fish/m3 and HR T of 4-15 days resulted in improvement in the pond water quality. |
