Abstract | Teppattana Paper Mill, a small non-integrated paper mill which manufactures paper and board was selected as the study object in this rese.arch. The study focused on potential waste minimization options in the mill. It mainly targeted raw water conservation, process modifications, improvements to the effluent treatment plant, energy conservation and to find possibilities for zero discharge. The study indicated that the raw water consumption is 89 m3 /tonne of paper, which is 7 times higher than the standard norms, and dissolved solids in raw water are 4 times higher than the accepted values. Suspended solid component leaving the manufacturing process is 59 kg/tonne of paper. The overall steam energy and electrical energy consumption of the mill is found to be 2 tonnes/tonne of paper and 631 kWh/tonne of paper respectively. Average load factor for the mill is 68%. The efficiency of the boiler is found to be 76%. Approximately 28% reduction in raw water consumption of the mill and 42% reduction in suspended solids to the primary clarifier is envisaged upon implementation of waste reduction measures such as water reuse and wastewater segregation. It is possible to increase it further with the implementation of cleaner production options. Electrical energy saving can be achieved by improving the load factor and replacing the oversize pumps and motors. A redu ction of 11 % in fuel cost is possible by inc1:easing the boiler efficiency to 85%. The study concludes with proposals to reduce the wastewater discharge to the river by almost 100% and to reduce ground water extraction by 83%. The designed water treatment plant has a pay back period of 1.74 years whereas for the cavity air floatation unit it is 3 years. |
