Abstract | To survive in the fierce competition era of retail business in Thailand, response to rapid economic, technological, and social changes, computer technology will play a more important role in this industry. Retailers have to focus on technological tools in their operating processes such as a bar code system, EDI, and management information system. The survey and interviews showed that Thai retailers now are not using information technology in full scale. In department stores, information technology plays significant roles in 3 operating systems : Merchandising system, Point-of-sale system, and Accounting information system. However, they started to implement customer information system and human resource information system. The case study on IT utilization has shown that IT contributes many benefits to retailers which include increasing the purchasing and inventory control more efficiently, reduce redundant or unnecessary working and data, provide availability of up-to-date information with a wide range of reports on products sold, cash and charge sales, and other vital statistical needs. On the wider scale, the utilization of IT has result to increase market share, price competitiveness, customer's satisfaction, profit, and enhance communication and decision making performance. Retail business in Thailand in the near future, IT will change its role from a competitive advantage tool to be a competitive necessity. The next generation of technology to be needed in retailing has to occupy more functions, higher speed and more convenience to use. The retail company in the future will has to able capitalize on new technology that can give convenience to shoppers. |
