AbstractThe rubber latex industry is one of the major industrial activities in Vietnam. It is mostly concentrated to Dong Nai province with five factories presently operating and causing adverse impacts on the surface water quality. This study investigates the Wastewater (WW) from Long Thanh, the most modern factory of rubber latex processing. The focus of the work was not only on the final effluents but also on the impact of three rubber latex processing factories on three receiving streams, with the aim to define of Water Quality Index (WQI) of this industry, as a new approach to quantify the water quality impact. The water consumption and WW discharge from block rubber, concentrated rubber, and washing processes of Long Thanh factory were measured to establish a water balance. The WW generated from production activities were discharged in average volume (734.2 m3 /d). The most polluted WW streams were the effluents from concentrated rubber. The mean values were, 8.S for pH; 2,696 (Pt-Co scale) for color; 7,782 mg/L for COD, S,387 mg/L for BODS, 200 mg/L for SS, and S20 mg/L for NH3. The effluent from block rubber processing was considered less polluted. It has low pH (S .2), high color (32S.6 Pt-Co scale), high COD (6,4S7 mg/L), high BODS (4,227 mg/L), high SS (414 mg/L), and high NHJ (161 mg/L). Phen, Born and Hon stream water characterizations were examineq at five sampling stations; both upstream and downstream. The results show that there is a significant impact of the factories on the recipient water; which increases the values of NH3, BODS, COD, SS, turbidity and color; but decreases of DO at the discharge point, as compared to 1 OOm upstream. Of all parameters, NH3, BODS and COD were above the standard given by the local authority. A WQI, prepared on the basis of ratings provided by 29 environmental experts in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province, highlights the impact of rubber latex industry to the streams. The results drawn from WQI and fuzzy index calculations are comparable to those from physical-chemical parameters analyses. It is concluded equally that WQI and fuzzy index can be used as the quantitative methods to assess the water quality impact.
