Abstract | Technology infrastructure is composed of several institutions which provide supportive activities to foster the technology-based development of firms/industry. These institutions may be classified into industry; R&D institutions; academia; technology mentors; and technology guiders. In many developing countries a firm's technology-based development trajectory moves from using mature technologies, to using new technologies, to using/generating emerging technologies . These three stages may be called the initiation stage, internalization stage, and generation stage respectively. At each of these three stages, the type of support that firms need from the technology infrastructure are different. This study presents a stage model of technology infrastructure progression that postulates the nature of the linkages and activities that the technology infrastructure needs to provide to firms as they move through these stages. The model is illustrated using the case of the technology infrastructure for the electronics industry in Taiwan with special emphasis on the semiconductor industry. Based on the findings the behavior patterns and attributes of the institutions of the technology infrastructure as they progress through the stages are summarized. A proposal is also made as to how developing countries could structure their technology infrastructure development. Recommendations for further study are also made. |
