AbstractMost previous published works focused on the use of wate1jets for cutting hard-tomachine materials such as alloys, composites and glass. This study attempts to design and conduct the experiments to cut softer material such as fabric, natural and artificial leathers. These are the materials utilized quite popularly in the textile and leatherware industries. However, the information related to the adoption of wate1jet cutting, an emerging technology nowadays, for the mentioned materials are still scarce in the open literature. At the first stage of this research, various types of materials were tried. Then, artificial leather was selected to be investigated further due to its sufficient amount available for testing, promise to success and quite big use in the concerned sectors. The sets of suitable cutting parameters, namely pump pressure and traverse rate, for various numbers of layers were determined. All tests were conducted with the orifice diameter of 0.254 mm, the range of traverse rate from 1000 mm/min to 10000 mm/min and that of pressure from 2000 bar to 3500 bar. Based upon the obtained results, the total cutting costs for a typical part lot were calculated for both wate1jet cutting process and the current method used in the visited factory (Bangkok Rubber Company). This comparison revealed that although the wate1jet cutting is more expensive but the lead time for whole cutting process is sho1tened significantly.
