AbstractIn this study, a vehicle scheduling methodology is developed based on a microcomputer programming language. The study presents two heuristic algorithm based on shortest processing time and longest processing time rule, so as to solve the scheduling problem with the objectives of minimizing the service time of the orders for delivery of gasoline products from the central depot to a large number of service stations. The travel time between any two points in the system is assumed to be known. In addition, the total quantity demand for products and a delivery acceptance period are specified for a number of stations included within the distribution system. Fuithermore, there are two types of time windows that have to be taken into consideration. The first one is because of the specified delivery acceptance period of the stations and the other is due to travel regulations of the vehicles. They can travel only during the specific periods. The developed procedure has been coded in Clipper. The software can prepare a schedule of vehicles for excuting the customer orders within a few minutes only. In addition, the software is quite flexible and the user can vary the criteria and parameters for matching and scheduling to suit the orders received on a pa1ticular day.
