Abstract | As different generations have different background and cultures, the different ideas and preferences about leadership and performance could be found. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the preferences for a particular leadership style differ from generation to generation and what impact their preferred leadership style has on their performances in Thai ICT workforce. Among many leadership styles, this research focused on transformational, transactional, passive-avoidant and servant leadership styles with four generational cohorts, namely Baby Boomer, Generation X, Generation Y and Generation Z. So, to investigate the differences in leadership styles of each generation and the impact on their performance, a quantitative survey-based methodology was employed. Then, descriptive statistic and inferential statistic were analyzed to address the research objectives. Studying the answers from 346 respondents in Thai IT companies, the findings of this research revealed that the differences exist among generational cohorts in the preferred leadership style, and only transactional leadership style has positive impact on the performance of different generations whereas transformational, passive-avoidant and servant leadership styles are not associated with performance of generational cohorts. Thus, this indicate that the leadership style preference of each generational cohort might not necessarily have the positive impact on their performance. Moreover, the result of this study implies that managers who practice transactional leadership style could dramatically influence the performance of different generations in Thai IT companies. |
