AbstractWhenever the word family comes, the discussion beings with the strong bonds and relationships members share. Some families utilize such bonds in doing business together, termed as family business. Family business, operated by generations of a family is more than just a business; it is their pride and family’s identity. Most of the family businesses fail to cope with change in family dynamics and business environment. This research aims to find the reasons for success and failure of family business in Nepal. With the help of the in-depth interviews and secondary research, this research has been conducted. The main factors viz. communication between the family members, delegation of the authority, transparency among family members, leadership and succession planning, motivation, human resource management practices and estate planning were identified as major criteria for a successful generational family business. This research study has been conducted to understand the challenges faced by family business and how they can be solved to bring harmony in its operation and move towards success. This research study has important practical and theoretical implications for the academicians and researchers who wish to research on family business, challenges faced in running a family business and how it can be overcome.
