AbstractTechnology is the backbone of today's business. If a manufacturing plant wishes to upgrade its technology in order to pursue a technology-based competitive strategy it needs to be able to benchmark its technology vis-a-vis technologically more advanced plants. However, prior to doing this the analysts must be able to determine the major components of manufacturing technology and the sub-elements that constitute it. This paper is an attempt to develop a methodology for assessing a plant's technology components. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches are used for the assessment of four technology components of a plant e.g., technoware, humanware, inforware and orgaware. The proposed methodology is then applied to a bronze powder manufacturing plant in Thailand. The results obtained provide useful insights in identifying the weaknesses and strengths in the elements of technology components of the plant studied. How this information can be used by decision makers to upgrade the technology components is also discussed.
