AbstractTrihalomethane precursors particularly humic substances have the potential of producing trihalomethanes which cause cancer in human body. Experimental investigation were conducted to evaluate performance of nanofiltration for the removal of trihalomethane precursors. Influence of pressure, initial feed concentrations, operation period, pH, competing compound (Ca2+ and Mg2+), membrane type and suspended solid on nanofiltration performance were also determined. The experimental study used two different type of nanofiltration membranes namely DK and NF45. Surface water has been treated by microfiltration and concentrated by nanofiltration to get mother solution as feed water. The study ranges of pressure, feed concentration, pH, competing compounds and suspended solid were 600-1000 kPa, 1-20 mg/L TOC, pH 4-11, 8-32 mg/L Ca2+, 2.4-14.4 mg/L Mg2+, 0-100 mg/L SS accordingly. Experimental results showed that the removal efficiency could be obtained above 92 %. Higher pressure, feed concentration, and suspended solids showed positive response, while presence of competing compound showed negative response on trihalomethane precursors rejection. NF45 is better than DK membrane in term of rejection, while DK is better in term of flux.
