AbstractChlorine disinfection has still been widely used in water treatment plants throughout Asian and pacific region due to its easy application, low cost and high efficiency. During water chlorination, chlorine should be properly applied to minimize the disinfection by-product formation and to ensure the killing of all bugs. Fully understanding the reactivity of natural organic matters in chlorination provides the possibility of optimization of water chlorination. This study was undertaken to investigate the universality of a proposed kinetic model for the prediction of chlorine decay pattern with the change of water quality parameters and with the modification of water treatment processes. Water samples from different sources were used in this study. Results show that the concept of this model can be applied to predict the chlorine consumption during water chlorination in all waters of natural origin. A small modification of this model is required with the change of water qualities, i.e. turbidity, ultraviolet absorbance at the wave length 260 nm. In case of pre-chlorination or pre-ozonation, new diagrams were created according to the kinetic model and the experiment data, and the chlorine decay pattern in the subsequent chlorination can be successfully simulated with the aid of these diagrams.
