Abstract | A new software developed to design the processes, practical equipment selection with their costs and power requirements. It also provides the design engineer a rough estimation of the capital as well as the operational cost of each unit and of the entire plant. It extracts different kind of information from the central database where the other subsystems have already stored it during the preceding step of the design phase. There are four different kinds of information required. The process configuration, the initial raw stream characteristics, design criteria and the design parameters of various processes. The process configuration describes the kinds of units that compose the plant and their interconnections with the various process streams. Design criteria also consider the various environmental restrictions imposed by the local municipalities. The design parameters of each process to lie within certain limits which in most cases are set empirically. The calculation of each type of unit process are organized into modules which are solved sequentially. Because of the modular structure of the program, new additional units can be added and modeled to the software. The software was developed on an IBM compatible PC, with a good man-machine interface and some useful help menus. For the operation of the software basic information that is wastewater flow with its quality parameters mainly BOD and suspended solids to be provided. Peak flow factor also taken into consideration. One can also specify the process controlling parameters according to the situation, otherwise default values have been taken for design. For the primary treatment, unit processes such as screening, grit removal, buffering, oil and grease removal, primary sedimentation are considered, one can select the most appropriate combination according to the situation. For the selection of secondary processes four kind of options are provided, these are conventional plug-flow, complete-mix, deep oxidation ditch, sequencing batch reactor, one can select any of these processes according to the wastewater characteristics. For the tertiary treatment only wastewater filtration is considered. Sludge treatment processes such as thickening, dewatering with conditioning also taken into account. This software also link to equipment database to get the update cost of equipments. Therefore the software can be used in design and estimate cost and practical equipment selection of wastewater treatment plants for single sludge activated sludge process. |
