AbstractThe study was conducted to detect changes in land cover or land use pattern in the mangrove forest of Chakaria sub-district of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. Change detection has done by integrated application of remote sensing and GIS techniques combindly with field data. Black and white and colored aerial photographs (1975 and 1983) of the study area were visually interpreted and two forest cover map was produced by using ARC/Info. Landsat TM Images of the year 1988 and 1992 were classified in ERDAS. Four color bands 1, 2, 3, 4 were used for digital classification. Both the unsupervised and supervised classification were done. The image coverage were transformed to ARC/Info coverage and by overlaying, lost forest cover were detected. Result showed that about 56% forest cover have been lost in Chakaria mangrove forest during the period of 1975 to 1992 which was 68% i.e. 6,856 ha of the total study area in 1975. At present shrimp farms cover an area of 6,664 ha (66%) of the total area and approximately in average 3 .29% of the forest had been lost or cleared for preparing shrimp farm each year. Satellite remote sensing techniques using Landsat TM data integrated with GIS technology have provided an efficient and cost effective method of streamlining update procedure. Major factors of deforestation in the study area are establishment of shrimp farms and socioeconomic condition of the local people. Local community depending on forest resource for their daily house hold purposes especially for fuel wood, fodder, poles, thatches etc. which lead to vast amount of deforestation in that area. Deforestation and establishment of slu·imp farms effect social life of the local people and influence their economic condition in both the way positively and negatively. It increase job opp01tunity and help to develop economic condition while over exploitation of forest product causes natural disasters like cyclone, storm surge, soil salinity increment, land slide, siltation and so· on. To keep the environmental balance reforestation program should implemented immediately by the Govt. to save natural mangrove forest from fmther destruction and create awareness among the people.
