Abstract | This research study aims at analysing crowdshipping as a solution for French companies to deliver their final customers. First, it presents an overview of existing literature concerning crowdshipping services This helped to identify three main stakeholders influencing the feasibility of this practice: companies that could use these services, drivers who deliver for crowdshipping platforms, and legal institutions. Semi-structured interviews of experts of customer delivery for French retailers have been conducted in order to understand the benefits and challenges of using crowdshipping for retailers. We found that the main advantage that this practice offers is the flexibility of the mass of drivers, that leads to cost savings, quicker delivery and a more responsive last-mile logistics. We also found out that crowdshipping can interest retailers because it gives access to a new customer segment and because it is seen as an eco-friendly solution. Yet retailers do not trust crowdshipping platforms on their ability to provide a substantial mass of drivers, and on the quality of the service offered by their drivers. Moreover, using this service requires a challenging reorganization of retail shops. An analysis of past studies conducted by research institutions or newspapers has been conducted to understand the willingness in the French crowd to work as driver for crowdshipping platforms. We found out that the main motivating factor is the autonomy that it involves, but the remuneration is considered to be unfavourable. Then, a study of past legal proceedings enabled to assess the legal risk that crowdshipping platforms face. It revealed that they are not considered to be competing unfairly with traditional actors of delivery, but they risk being sentenced of breaking the labour law. |
