Abstract | In many developing country firms, the transferee of technology often does not know what
constitutes the flow of technology and what he should specifically look for while using a
particular mechanism of transfer of technology. An examination of international
technology transfer mechanisms, under a comprehensive definition of technology, can
facilitate the understanding of the usefulness and limitations of these mechanisms from the
point of view of their technology transfer potential. Based on the review of literature, the
study develops a conceptual framework for examining common technology transfer
mechanisms, showing the extent to which the various components of product and process
technology can be transferred through these mechanisms. Afterwards, the research
attempts to demonstrate the validity and usefulness of the framework, by carrying out case
studies in three transferee companies, from India, which have implemented international
technology transfer arrangements. Based on the findings of the case studies, some
prescriptions are made as to how a transferee of technology can ensure that a technology
transfer gap, in terms of the components that have not been transferred, does not arise.
Since this research is of an exploratory nature, suggestions have been made for further
research possibilities, that can examine in greater depth the problem that has been studied. |
