Abstract | Motorcyclists traditionally have been considered as a high risk population when compared to other vehicle drivers. In developing countries the motorcycle is a very common vehicle among citizens and also it has a high accident rate. Most of the accidents recorded were from the youth category and this can be due to the nature of young riders behavior. Even though there are many records of bad behavior and accidents of young motorcyclists, the accident involvement of young riders are increasing. The question that arises here is whether negative experiences affect driver behavior or not. Identifying the riders behavior can help to clarify the nature of the accident. The difference of this study from previous studies is analyzing the riders profile and socio demographic factors which can be related to the drivers bad behavior. This study adopts structural equation modeling to analyze the collected data from 142 respondents of different age and backgrounds. All the data were collected from Colombo district Sri Lanka. The results show a positive influence of negative experience to the riders bad behavior. Meanwhile the results shows that young riders have more bad behavior. The study clarifies that there is a strong positive relationship between the riders bad behavior and past negative experience caused by motorcycle riding. The most common bad behavior in motorcycle riders is their lack of safety awareness. Overall result of this study shows that there is a significant positive effect from riders past negative experience to the bad riding behavior. |
