Abstract | Motorcycles have been increasingly dominating the streets of developing countries during the recent years, due to their high level of accessibility and inexpensive price tag. Although motorcycles are very advantages to people, they have also introduced new risks due to their unsafe nature. Riding a motorcycle is risky by default, but when you ride it while being drunk, the risk doubles. The implementation of traffic laws against alcohol impaired driving have been failing, and people have found ways to drive drunk and get away with it. The problem is that not everyone is lucky enough to ride while being drunk, and not get into an accident. To solve this problem, this research goes to the root of the problem to identify what factors affect and influence alcohol impaired driving behavior. The group under considera- tion are the young, male motorcycle riders in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Questionnaires designed using the concept of the theory of planned behavior were sent out to collect data on people's psychological factors, socio-demographic factors and negative experiences. These data were analyzed using models designed using structural equation modeling for the con- cept of the theory of planned behavior. The results concluded that people continue to drink and drive even when they have had experienced accidents from driving while being drunk. It was also concluded that people's perceived behavior and attitude towards alcohol impaired driving, contributes a lot in forming a decision on whether to engage in alcohol impaired driving or not. The results reveal that the alcohol impaired driving problem is a major hazard for the society, more than it was expected to be. |
