Abstract | The study presents the maintenance of a series system, consisting generally speaking of two parts, which are subject to stochastic failures. The parts are functioning independent of each other. One of the parts is the critical pait from point of view of maintenance scheduling. When it breaks down the system fails which involves break - down cost. To avoid a frequent occunence of this cost a preventive maintenance is allowed. In addition, opportunities arise according to a renewal process when we can either replace critical pait at a reduced cost or do nothing. The problem is formulated as a Markov Decision Process. If the critical pait has increasing failure rate, the maintenance .policy that minimizes the expected total cost or the average cost of maintenance is characterized by a single parameter i*. If an opportunity exists, we replace (maintain) the critical pa1t, which is nonfailed only if its age exceeds i*. Based on cost and failure data, the parameter i* is derived for some opportunistic maintenance policy. The operating characteristics of the system are determined for the case where the opportunities arise according to an exponential arrival process. The problem of opportunistic preventive maintenance is also considered as a Multiple Criteria Decision Making problem, with some criteria of optimization. The MCDM method PROMETHEE is utilized to study the problem. |
