AbstractVietnam is changing quickly towards a market economy. Adapting to the environment is a common philosophy in business. However, how to do this is still a big question for all Vietnamese companies. The problem becomes more serious for the state companies, because they were familiar to the centrally planning economy. In order to survive and develop in a competitive environment, they need to build their own strategies to direct all business activities. Textile is the industry dominated by the state sector. This research took Phuoc Long Textile Company (state company) as a case study to analyze and develop a competitive strategy for it. First, the external environment including the macroenvironment and textile industry's structure was analyzed in order to identify the opportunities and threats for the company. Second, the internal analysis of the company was conducted to determine its strengths and weaknesses in comparison with competitors. Finally, based on SWOT analysis (combination of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats), a competitive strategy was formulated and proposed. Through the case of Phuoc Long Textile Company, the research demonstrated a framework on the strategic analysis process for other companies in the textile industry. The research also gave out some recommendations to the Vietnamese government and the Vietnam National Textile-Garment Corporation with the aim of building the necessary conditions and supports for the textile companies to develop in the new context.
