Abstract | The Construction Industry in Vietnam is developing rapidly along with increasing technology transfer in this field. This study reviews the technology transfer mechanisms that have been used in the Construction Industry and examines the extent of transfer of technology components through selected transfer mechanisms. At present the Vietnamese government is encouraging foreign investment under mechanisms of BOT and joint venture in order to improve the infrastructure and assimilate new technologies. Other cooperation forms in this sector are subcontractor, expe1t service and management contract. For the renovation and modernization of construction equipment, the construction companies have acquired new machines through leasing and purchasing. The results show that, technology transfer in the construction sector has brought Vietnamese builders new machines to support designing and construction work, and new techniques for construction and design. There is evidence to suggest that the skills of technical staff have been upgraded through technology transfer. The information provided by the transferors appears to be adequate and it assists the transferees not only in operating and adapting the new machines but also in assimilating and innovating the new techniques in design and construction work. Furthermore, the capabilities of the Vietnamese builders in term of design and construction have been improved. |
