Abstract | Cambodia has a substantial area of wetlands. The people are culturally and economically closely linked to wetlands resources which provide fish products, the most significant source of protein and income generation. Exploratory was one approach used in this study with the help of semi-structured interviewing. 30 of 55 villages from the Distant and 28 of 59 from the Near of Boeng Chhma lake, were randomly selected for the interviews and discussion. The study site is of great ecological value. Social services and living conditions of village communities were very low. The main constraints were found to be secwity, low income, marketing problems, lack of alternative sources of income, and limited access to resources exploitation. In attitudes towards resources conservation, village communities are conscious of the crucial role played by resources and are conscious of the importance of resources protection in the site. Practices that were found to be threatening the sustainability of natural resources were bird poisoning and flooded forest destruction due to fire. There is an existing wetland legislation in Cambodia. However, there are problems in implementing the rules and regulations. Developing a loan system, creating medical centers and schools, and encouraging people to treat drinking water and improvement of sanitation system is one solution to improve the local living conditions and towards resources conservation at the site, it requires the administrative improvement which must be extremely motivated in their work and enjoy good relations with the population, while being strict in applying the regulations of resources conservation. It must be competent to solve the problems for the benefits to both sides: local residents and lake management objectives. |
