AbstractFrom 1988 up to the present, Vietnam's economy has seen a rapid transformation from a centralized command economy to a market economy. From the opinion of some experts, Vietnam is lacking competent and flexible business managers capable of steering an economic development of the country in the transformation period. This explains why the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) pays its attention to Management Training in Vietnam. The objective of this study is to identify the various training needs for mid-level managers in Vietnam, then reveal the most expected management skills to be trained of the local managers and the most appropriate course format which is most likely to be accepted. The data showed the facts that ~ majority of Vietnamese managers consider the competency of the business managers as the decisive factor that influences the bad situation of enterprises at present. The technical, professional skills; communicative skills; business operating skills; decision making skills in a creative and decisive manner and interpersonal skills are their top training expectation. Two types of training courses preferred by the respondents in Hanoi are short courses and seminars. From the opinion of the expatriates, the most urgent management skills that the local managers needed to be re-trained are: problem-solving skills, decision-making skills and interpersonal skills. Their preferred training forms are: Short-term (2-3 months); coaching and on-the-job training. Finally, a proposal entry strategy for SEAMEO in Vietnam was formulated.
