Abstract | Due to the renovation policy of the Vietnamese Government in 1986, more and more new banks are entering into the Vietnamese banking industry. Therefore, Vietnamese commercial banks in general and the Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) in particular have to face stiff competition today. Bearing this in mind, the present study tries to find out a suitable information technology (IT) development strategy for Vietcombank to survive and attain competitive advantage. Toward the end, various factors that facilitate as well as inhibit the IT development process are determined and discussed. The current level of IT application of the bank is also assessed and compared with that of Thai banks. The IT development strategy of Vietcombank with regard to communication networks, IT-based banking products and personnel development is drawn and discussed. Finally, the paper comes up with some recommendations relating to how to make use of facilitators and overcome inhibitors, as well as a suitable IT development strategy for Vietcombank. |
