AbstractThis study concerns with designing routes network system and determining optimal fleet size, bus frequency and allocation bus to depot centers. Due to the complexity of real world network, route design phase is done by a heuristic procedure. An interactive graphic - database management, GIS component has been employed to present road network and to store the data of network. In contrmy with route design phase, fleet size, bus frequency and bus allocation are determined by optimization programming. An interactive approach between route design phase and fleet size determination phase is proposed. This approach aims to select the best set of routes among alternatives. It is done by computing 'investment' cost based on fleet size and 'customer unsatisfied' cost based on non direct path between two zones. The mentioned methodology was applied to Hanoi network. Two potential alternatives has been constructed for 28 traffic zones of urban Hanoi. Each has different routes, fleet size, bus frequency and bus allocation. The set composed of 22 routes is proposed to Hanoi Bus Company.
