Abstract | A large number of raw materials are necessary for Thien Loe Shoe Company and therefore the inventory cost involved is a great amount. The existing inventory system of the company, which is independently controlled according to the customer orders is not optimum. The objective of this study is to find out an optimum or nearly optimum inventory control policy. A lot of inventory systems have been proposed and compared to select the best one. They are MRP lot sizing system, heuristic procedure system, optimum procedure system including two methods of running on PC and on a mini computer. The best inventory system is a trade-off between a low total inventory cost, a short time to get the solution, a low expense of computer-based facilities, and a flexibility of further analyses. Raw material items are classified according to ABC analysis and supplier. There are totally 193 items and 11 suppliers. Different proposed inventory models are implemented to each of supplier families. The results obtained are analyzed, and some recommendations are made. The heuristic procedure system have been chosen to replace the current inventory system. This replacement brings a savings of 34 % of the total inventory cost. |
