AbstractIn this study a model for designing an inspection procedure is developed. The model is concerned with the inspection procedure in a se1ial production system. In this system each item must pass through some stages to become a finished product. At the termination of each stage there is a potential inspection station at which multiple charactedstic of the items can be inspected. An item with any characte1istic that do not confo1m to predete1mined specification limit is scrapped. It is assumed that the characte1istics are statistically independent but the decision of whether to accept or reject an item at each stage depend on rejection cost at current stage and total expected acceptance cost of all characteiistics at later stages. The charactedstics can be under TheN ominal-The-Best, The-Smaller-The-Best or The-Larger-The-Best tolerance type. Decision vaiiables are inspection rates and specification limits of the charactedstics. Objective function to be minimized is per-item expected total cost, which includes peritem expected rejection cost, acceptance cost and inspection cost. An alg01ithm is proposed to find the optimum solution of the model. A program in Pascal language is developed to test the alg01ithm using real data collected. A study of a real production system with its current inspection procedure is provided. The model is applied to this production system. The solution de1ived is compared with the current solution in the production system to illustrate an economic advantage of the model proposed.
