AbstractSwell potential is a measurement of the change in volume in accordance to the change in water content. This volume change depends on the composition of clay in the soil. The amount of swell of a particular soil depends on the amount of vertical stress applied, the soil composition, initial water content and unit weight. Therefore, the consequences on the swelling characteristics of the soil in chonburi area are studied by testing with various dry density values and moisture content. The relationship between the swell percent and time can be plotted in rectangular hyperbola. This helps to predict the ultimate swell percentage. The study focuses the attention of the detrimental effect of the significant increase in percent swell as the water content decrease and the dry density increase at the same moisture content.
