Abstract | Constant rate of strain consolidation tests with radial drainage , a new consolidation test, were performed to investigate the horizontal consolidation characteristics of soft Bangkok clay such as horizontal coefficient of consolidation (ch) , horizontal coefficient of permeability (k11), and preconsolidation pressure (crp'). The constant rate of strain consolidometer with radial drainage was designed and fabricated, a new formulation was required for this type of test. Twenty four (24) CRS-R tests were conducted at various strain rates to compare with fourteen (14) conventional oedometer tests. From the experimental investigation, the results show that the pore pressure distribution curves obtained at various strain rates match well with that obtained from theoretical solution based on Barron's theory. The horizontal coefficients of consolidation and permeability are independent of strain rate. The compression curves and preconsolidation pressures obtained at slow strain rate are in good agreement with that obtained from conventional oedometer tests. The preconsolidation pressures increase with increasing rate of strain, implying that some secondary consolidati,on occurred during primary consolidation for soft Bangkok clay. In addition, the coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal to vertical directions ranges from 1 to 3 and the ratio of horizontal to vertical coefficient of permeability varies from 1to2 for depths of 3.5 to 6.5 m. |
