Abstract | Songkla has been a seaport town since 200 years ago approximately. Its histories were obviously traced in the historic documents,, old-age photographs and it's remaining urban elements, and which distinguish displayed the characters of fortification and commercial port town of the past. To preserve this value of the historical town, the joint research between Mahidol and Silpakom University were intended in 1993. The project covers the area of particular historical objects and urban core on two sides of the lake and speculates the environmental improvement designing for such a historical place. This study partially represents the project in the area of Nakomnork-Nakornnai old urban core and emphasises on its diverse characteristic buildings of different construction period. The specific concept for urban conservation employed in this study is focus on the building facade's restoration. The manual methodology used for the spatial study in the previous project generates confusion in the attaching of attribute information with geographical data. For example, to present the different criteria of the plots it needs a separate map individually, which raises puzzlement ip data storing process. To resolve the existed problems of data managing, GIS function explores its capability into one selected site of urban core to test its possibility for actual use in urban conservation works. This study experiments the use of ArcCAD because it associates with AutoCAD program that primarily employed in the existent works nowadays. Another program to display GIS information is Arc View 2.1 that contains effective operations in displaying digital images of the buildings diversely. Moreover, to solve the primary problem of urban conservation project, people's participation, it needs an attractive presenting the information of the project to the local people at first. The selection of the presentation packages considers its compatibility with other programs used previously. Power Point has an easy operational system to create the slide presentation or other promotion campaigns of the project. The information presents in historical knowledge and conservation aspects comprehensively as for generating the better participation of the people in the project area. However, the computer implication for urban conservation is just setting. On one hand, urban conservation project needs an optimise concepts to deal with modem urban management plan, which are beyond the existing policies today. On another hand, to employ GIS tools it needs expertise personnel, training, and many digital equipment, which beyond the capability of the institution too. The possibility to use computer in the actual situation still needs further study to find out the most appropriate way for it. |
