AbstractMajor changes take place in the planform and bed topography of the Jamuna River (Bangladesh), pa11icularly during the flood season and the effects of these changes are carried out in this study in the form of stability analysis by pe11urbation method. A two-dimensional model of flow and sediment transport in an originally straight alluvial river with erodible bed and non-erodible banks is developed and applied in which the effect of transverse slope resulting from the effect of secondary currents, the effect of spiral motion due to curvature of the channel on the bed shear stress and the effect of the frictional resistance from bedforms is incorporated in the model. The transportation of the sediment is composed of bed load and suspended load (wash load excluded). The main purpose of the model is to describe the 2-D flow leading to instability of the dune covered alluvial river. A stability theory has been developed which determines the most unstable mode, the celerity of the sand dune and the wavenumber corresponds to maximum instability. The analysis is also able to predict whether a river would braid or meander. The model has been applied based on the data collected on Jamuna River. Several implications of the proposed model are also discussed.
