AbstractThis study aims to use a Geographical Infomation System (GIS) in the management of large surface irrigation systems. The Krasieo Irrigation System in Thailand has been selected for the purpose. GIS database was developed for the study area. A vector-based GIS (PC ARCINFO) was used to accomplish the study. From Krasieo Irrigation project one tertiary unit was selected for detailed study. For the this purpose, several layers were prepared from tertairy unit map; which were digitized , overlaid and attributed with non-spatial data for analysis beside other maps of scheme. This study demonstrated the utility of GIS for managment, manipulation, query, display and analysis of spatial data related to irrigation system. The database developed is useful for identifying, crop area distribution, type of crop, number of hydraulic structures with the demographic information at tertiary unit level. The developed GIS database has large storage capacity for highly diversified data and also for updating when it is required.
