AbstractIn today's telecommunication networks, it's well known that unexpected failures in the physical links may cause significant loss or interruption of services. It's desirable if the deterioration of links can be recognized early and maintenance is taken before the failure occurs. The main objective of monitoring strategy is to detect any performance degradation of the monitored component in order to prevent unexpected failures. Recently, ATM-based networks have been recommended as the future universal networks. However, there is very little research on performance monitoring of ATM-based networks. Hence, modified from Kubat's continuous monitoring model (1992), this research presents a continuous-monitoring model for a general ATM network whose branches are slowly deteriorating. The performance index of the links is BER index. Due to multiple-service characteristics of ATM-based networks, several BER indexes of respective services are continuously monitored under certain routing protocols proposed by Hwang and Kurose (1991). If one or more BER index exceeds its individual action limit (optimal BER index), the repair procedure is initiated. The action limit is derived so that the long run average maintenance cost is minimized. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate the proposed model and the optimization results
