AbstractIn this research, a gateway selection algorithm is proposed to find the location of gateways to interconnect a mobile data network and a fixed data network based on minimizing average packet delays. The cost function to minimize consists of three separate terms with different weighting factors on each term, namely, internet packet delay, intranet packet delay in the mobile network and intranet packet delay in the fixed network. In addition, we use discrete capacity assignments for each gateway in order to achieve the efficient use of the restricted budget. After the derivation, the algorithm was programmed and then tested by various problems. The modified algorithm is shown to be appropriate for the interconnection design between networks that have different delay characteristics, for instance, a mobile data network and a fixed data network. It also enables the designer to give different quality of services to each networks. Finally, it improves the delay objective function by the use of discrete capacity assignment for each gateway. The solution obtained from the algorithm is applicable provided that the average values of the input traffic rates are known, and the input traffic variation is small during the service time
