AbstractBangkok has been widely known for her notorious traffic congestion during this last decade and one of the major contributing factors to this severe congestion problem is the school trips. Many studies recommended that proper school bus system should be implemented in Bangkok to alleviate the congested problem. The main aim of research study is to examine the feasibility of implementing school bus system in Bangkok. The study investigated the present situation of school bus system and attitudes of people toward proper school bus system in many facets. The simulation of school bus routing was carried out in the selected pilot school in Bangkok by utilizing the computer software developed specially for this study. Costs of providing and operating school buses were investigated and the financial analysis was carried out. Finally, considered both users and operators sides, the proper school bus system in Bangkok together with its suitable fare rate were proposed in this research study. Major findings from this study revealed that the government should pay more attention on school bus system in Bangkok. Most of people are willing to use school bus if proper school bus is provided. In the operating viewpoint, Van with 12 seats is the most suitable vehicle for school bus for its flexibility and shortest average travel time. On the other hand, microbus with 20 seats consumes longer average time but is more attractive and with the lower fare rate. Bus with 40 seats gives the lowest fare rate but its travel time is unacceptable. Financial study indicated that school bus system needs subsidy to serve the majority of people. Some incentives for school bus should be implemented such as parking spaces, priority on transit lanes to attract more people to use their services.
