Abstract | Ozone has been used extensively as a disinfectant but not been widely used as a pretreatment for coagulation in water treatment processes. In this study, laboratory scale experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of preozonation on particle destabilization. Chao Phraya River water is chosen as raw water of this study since it is the major source of water supply for Bangkok. As a result, the optimum combination of ozone and coagulant dosage is found at about ozone 0.5 mg/I with PACI 20 mg/I or alum 80 mg/I. Preozonation can reduce the amount of coagulant, which in turn substantially reduces the volume of chemical sludge that has to be handled. It is also found that preozonation increased E260 removal that is surrgate parameter for humic substances in natural water. As it was already found that organic components in Chao Phraya River water are almost similar to those in Japan and USA (in terms of reactivity to free chlorine, THM formation, molecular weight distribution, E220/E260), findings obtained in this study could be applicable .to most of natural waters. |
