Abstract | As opposed to prior research that have focused on all the social parameters that have been perceived as barriers to career advancement of women, no other research has been conducted on the organizational barriers that are perceived by women, especially in the banking sector of Nepal. Not only that, there haven’t been much research about organizational barriers faced by women in other sectors in Nepal too. Research: in Nepal and in the Indian subcontinent have always focused on the social barriers and glass ceilings that women face. However, organizational barriers in it reflect the social conditioning of individuals and how the societal norms and perception regarding women at work can be mirrored through what they perceive as barriers to their career advancement. An organization too is an extension of the society and the culture and practices there is a reflection of the society itself. The primary purpose of the research is to assess the perceived organizational barriers faced by women that hinder their career advancement. To fulfill the purpose, research data were collected from 262 female employees currently employed at various levels of management in several banks Kathmandu, Nepal. The data was collected through a questionnaire-based survey. The developed questionnaire consists of various scales based on previous academic studies incorporating organization-related scales as well as new scales to understand new beliefs and notion. A multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypothesis of this study, while the correlation analysis was also adapted to assess the correlation between different variables. Three of the four independent variable, namely: organizational culture, mentoring and, organizational networking and interpersonal relationship, has a significant relationship with career advancement of women in the banking sector of Nepal. However, tokenism along with the controlled variables too did not have a significant relationship with career advancement. |
