Abstract | The Sukhothai Grnundwater development project (SGDP) on the Sukhothai plain, which located in the Yom basin, was implemented following many explorato1y studies in 1970's. The area was recognized as having a large potential for groundwater development. Because of the increasing demand, the abstraction of groundwater to fulfill the demand causes an excessive drawdown of the groundwater table. No1mally the extraction volume of groundwater is limited by the aquifer system Excess withdrawal of groundwater results in several undesirable effects namely pe1manent depletion of groundwater, land subsidence problem, degradation of water quality and development of uneconomic pumping. Groundwater flow problems are complex, possessing non-linear features that involve variations in an aquifer's hydraulic conductivities, bounda1y conditions that change with time and other long te1m time-dependent effects. In other to address these problems an integrated hydrological modeling system (MIKE SHE) which includes a three-dimensional model of groundwater flow and models for the decription of the processes in the upper soil pa1t and overland pa1t of the hydrological regime is used. Calculations of water balances and water table variations under present and future condition is used to identify possible exploitation strategies. The analyses are also include conjugate use of smface water and groundwater. |
