AbstractControlling of shield due to complicated geological structure is difficult and the required capacity can not be predicted as a result of snake motion, which is occurred especially on sharp curve. To find out the required jack force and moments to drive the shield along any circular path, a computer program is developed in FORTRAN 77 based on mathematical model for closed type cylindrical shield which is applicable for both sandy and clayey ground. The required number of discritized elements on cutter face and skin plate to approximate the stress condition and the distance between two successive steps for reasonable approximation of excavated area have been investigated. It is found from this research that shield is controlled mainly by the position of jack and erector center. Influence of soil parameter and alig1m1ent on jack force, moments and other index parameters are also investigated. Jack ·moments increases with the increase of curvature of the path and negligible moments are required along straight path for this dimension of shield
