Abstract | This study is an attempt to conduct an evaluation of pollutional impacts in On-Nooch solid waste disposal site Bangkok, aiming to convert the vicinity into a public park. It has already been accepted by the public that the operation of open dumping is not an environmentally sound practice in the solid waste management. It can create ecological, public health, socio-economic effect etc. Hence, evaluation of these impacts is deemed essential in order to develop and implement mitigation measures to abate and minimize environmental pollution. Leachate and gas samples were collected twice at On-Nooch disposal site to survey the existing qualities of the leachate and air and identify problematic pollutants by comparing the results of the analysis with the Industrial Effluent Standards and Ambient Air Quality Standard. Analytical results showed that the quality of the wastewater discharged by the leachate treatment plant are still higher than established limits for effluents in Thailand; however measurements for existing water quality in Khlong Song Hong are within acceptable limits for surface water quality except for coliform which is slightly above the recommended standards. Evaluation of the level of CH4 and C02 in the ambient air of On-Nooch area are found to be much higher than the normal air concentration. Hence subjective environmental effects could be expected from residents. A simple two dimension matrix was designed to evaluate the pollutional impacts of the study area. Based on the environmental impact assessment, a set of mitigation measures were suggested. If the proposed mitigation measures are put into action, most of the induced negative impacts will be minor. The advantages gained in socio-economic aspect could outweight its adverse impacts. |
