AbstractThe increasing problem of groundwater pollution in Hanoi aquifer system has created the needs for evaluation of groundwater quality and existing monitoring network. This evaluation is carried out based on geochemical and geostatistical techniques. From the geochemical analysis the different types of water represented in the study area were determined. The results showed the presence of excess carbonate hardness in water and type of water of HC03 - C03 - Ca - Mg was found. The geostatistical technique determines the spatial relation of groundwater quality variables by using GEO - EAS software. The groundwater quality maps for each quality variable and overall critical zone maps were prepared and assessed. The results showed that there are six chemical parameters: Total Iron, Ammonium, Bicarbonate, Phosphate, Nitrite, Sodium and one physical parameter: pH indicator were found beyond the permissible limits for drinking purposes in some places. Two possible sources for groundwater pollution are: one from natural sources, other from human activities like waste disposal sites, industrial wastes and percolated irrigation water from agriculture. It was also found that the severe zone of groundwater contamination has shifted according to the severe zone of drop of water level. The existing groundwater monitoring network was evaluated based on overall critical zone map of water quality variables and map of severe drop of water level. It was found that almost existing monitoring wells located within the critical zones, high values of KSD were found at some places where the existing monitoring wells were absent. A new groundwater monitoring network was designed by using geostatistical technique that can provide data adequate to describe both stochastic and spatial features of water quality variables. Six different alternatives of monitoring networks were developed consisting of different number of monitoring wells. The best alternative then has been selected by using Multicriteria Decision Making Approach as Compromise Programming.
