AbstractFull scale open windrow composting of sewage sludge and nightsoil sludge was undertaken with two sets of experiments. For mono composting, sewage sludge and nightsoil sludge was composted with municipal solid waste and rice straw as carbon source and plastic media as structure material. For combined composting, sewage sludge and nightsoil sludge were composted together with municipal solid waste as carbon source and plastic media as structure material. The composting materials were turned every day for the first week and then once a week. Temperatures were recorded before turning. The chemical and physical parameters were observed throughout the composting period. Fecal coliform was used as the hygienic indicator. Composting of organic matter was found to be completed within 75-117 days of composting yielded a safe compost product from a view point of fecal coliform concentration. Based on the quality of compost obtained, this compost material can be used not only to improve the soil quality but also gives a fertilizer value because it contain N:P:K value 1.0-2.1 %N, 0.48- l.0%P and 0.41-0.81 %K. To combine both sewage and nightsoil sludges and municipal solid waste into a composting process was advantages from the view point that it was economical to dispose two kinds of waste simultaneously by the same process.
