AbstractFour laboratory scale Upflow Anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were fed with synthetic wastewaters containing varied concentratin of nitrate and with glucose as the only source of organic carbon in order to investigate and compare the effects of denitrification process to anaerobic digester. Varying COD:N-N03 ratios of 65.64, 32.82, 10.24 and 2.05 with HRT 12, 9 and 6 hours , complete denitrification were obtained from ratio 65.64, 32.82 and 10.24 while 56% of total nitrate fed were reduced at ratio 2.05. Lower effluent COD were obtained from lower COD:N-N03 ratio with particular HRT. At COD:N-N03 ratio 2.05, effluent COD lower than 200 mg/I were obtained. The 9.30 %, 17.10%, 45.85% and 85.11% of total removed COD were utilized for denitrification with HRT 12 hours at COD:N-N03 ratio 65.64, 32.82, 10.24 and 2.05 ,respectively. The portions of COD removed by denitrification increased with decreased COD:N-N03 ratio. Acetic acid was found as the major VFA produced from low COD:N-N03 feeding system with relatively low concentration of butyric acid and propionic acid . The accumulation of VF A, higher effluent COD and lower percent methane production were obtained with shortened HRT. Sludge fed with COD:N-N03 ratio 32.82, 10.24 and 2.05 had the specific activity 23%, 16% and 55% less than inital sludge
