Abstract | This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiencies of the attached-growth waste stabilization pond (AGWSP) in treating a pulp and paper mill wastewater . Preliminary results obtained in the laboratory-scale experimens revealed that the AGWSP fed with the raw pulp and paper mill wastewater had low COD removal efficiency and small amount of attached and dispersed biomass; so the raw pulp and paper mill wastewater had to be pretreated before feeding to the AGWSP units .The jar-test results showed that the alum dose of 4 g/L was optimum for pretreating the pulp and paper mill wastewater , based on the high COD removal efficiency . Data from the laboratory-scale experiments using the pretreated pulp and paper mill wastewater showed better BOD5 , COD , nutrient , SS and color removal in the AGWSP units than in the control unit without attached-growth media . The laboratory-scale AGWSP unit operating at the influent COD concentration of 500 mg/L , corresponding to the organic lading rate (OLR) of 125 kg COD/ha-day and the HRT of 10 days , gave the highest COD removal efficiency of 63 % . Due to the higher temperature and the presence of the natural sunlight which could enhance more biological activities in the pond water , the pilot-scale AGWSP unit operating at the OLR of 275 kg COD I ha-day and HRT of 10 days had the BOD and COD removal in the ranges of 76 - 93 % and 63 - 74 % , respectively ; while the removal efficiencies of TKN and total-P were 62 and 78 % , respectively . In addition , the SS and color removal were 94 and 92 % , respectively . Based on the kinetic studies of COD removal , the AGWSP units used for treating the pulp and paper mill wastewater had low plug flow kinetic rate constants ( k 20 PF) about 0.016 - 0.137 day - t , which could be due to the presence of some toxic compounds in the pond water . |
